The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations require employers to appoint ‘one or more competent persons’ to help them meet their duty to control risks at work.

Companies with more than five employees are required to:

Prepare a health & safety policy
Carry out and document risk assessments
Ensure that equipment and machinery is safe and that safe systems of work are in place
  Provide adequate welfare facilities
Ensure substances are handled and stored safely
Give workers information, instruction and training

Failure to comply with legislation may result in severe penalties, crippling fines and even a prison sentence.
